Even though, in our many conversations, they mentioned that it is not easy. Opening your own school comes with a lot of ups and downs, takes hard work and you will have to spend a lot of your own money. Regardless, they pushed through because they saw that in their community there was a need for young children to attend school. They started with only 3 children and did not give up. In a short time, they have grown and now they have 25 children attending Cherries Preschool. Working in an International school is so different from working in a local school here in Indonesia. We are privileged with our books in the library, computers, spacious classrooms, resources, theater, lunch room and Aqua land...just to name a few. Therefore, we wanted to share our resources with the children from Cherries Preschool and give back to our community. My ex colleagues mentioned that visiting our school would be a great day out for them, because they do not visit other places that often. So we invited them to come along and play with us in our Aqua-land and we had fun that day. We started the morning with performances. Our children sang the song "It is you, it is me, it is us, it is love that builds community". Our children learned so much that day. They learned to value others by inviting them to their school. They learned to be a good host and to ensure that the other children had enough to play with. They learned to perform and to be a good audience. They learned to share their resources and divide the attention of the adults around them. Our children and parents also gathered and donated books for Cherries Preschool. Therefore, we all learned to show care for others. Most of all..... we learned to make new friends and to become active members in building a community.
