Promotional events that I have participated in usually take place in malls or educational fairs. I love reading to young children but I must say that reading during promotional events is quite challenging. One of the main reasons why it is so challenging is because it is usually very crowded. When you read in front of your class, it is easy to grasp the children's attention. You are in a closed space and children now what they have to focus upon. Now, when you read during events like this, it becomes harder because you do not know the children and the children certainly do not know you. You do not know their names, so it often becomes hard to address them. Most malls do not allow you to use microphones, so you need to use a loud voice and try to be heard by your audience. I am always glad when I can use a microphone, so I know I do not have to "Shout". Although, I must say that I am still learning the skills of holding a book, turning pages, and holding a microphone at the same timel. When the school announces the reading sessions, they usually prepare certain time slots for me to read. So far, we have never been able to stick to the original times. This is because we have to see who shows up and if the audience is big enough to start. Sometimes it helps to wait for a little and to just start talking first to the people that visit our promotional booth. You also have to able to see if your audience has time to sit down and listen to your story. In malls, people just often want to do quickly, so you have to spark interest before reading. So yes...there might be many challenges when trying to read a book during events. However, despite the challenges, there is a great opportunity. First of all, you get to meet people (network). You are given a way to promote your book and you are also contributing to the school. I would highly suggest being flexible and to just enjoy the moments with the people who are interested, even if it is a small audience.
