My dear cousin who lives in the Netherlands posted about education in the Netherlands on her Facebook. She mentioned that her eight-year-old daughter has so many tests and on top of that has to present a Prezi presentation too. Others who replied on her post spoke about teenagers having burnouts or no time to meet due to studying for tests. Of course, my cousin wants her child to succeed, her child who is only eight years old. So she is going to help her daughter this week prepare for her geography test, reading the clock test and history test, etc. I know that teaching to test is becoming a problem in many countries. I am wondering, are we too blind to see that too many tests take away the creativity and imagination of the child? Too blind to see that it takes away quality time at home and in the classroom? Too blind to see that children become frustrated and stressed? Too blind to see that it takes away the passion and curiosity for learning? Too blind to see that it takes away the desire to teach? What are schools trying to achieve by conducting all these tests? Are these tests really purposeful and do we do something with the results to help these young children? Or do we simply move on to the next test because that is what the expectations are for educators nowadays?
